What Actually Makes a Mobile RPG Worth Your Time
Mobile RPGs are a minefield. For every Emberfall Chronicle there are ten games that look gorgeous in screenshots and turn out to be a progress bar wearing a costume. So what's the difference?
The first thing I check is whether battles ask me to make decisions. If I can autoplay every fight and win, there's no game there — just a reward schedule. The best ones, even the quick ones, make me think about positioning or elemental matchups.
The second is writing. You don't need a novel's worth of lore, but your party should feel like people, not stat blocks. The games I remember are the ones where I cared whether a character made it through a fight.
Finally, respect for my time. A good mobile RPG lets me play in ten-minute bursts and in two-hour marathons without punishing either. The moment a game feels like a job, I'm out.
None of this is complicated, but it's amazing how many games miss all three.
