Strategy Games on a Phone: Can It Actually Work?

Strategy Games on a Phone: Can It Actually Work?

I used to believe strategy games belonged on PC and nowhere else. Then I spent a weekend with Iron Meridian and had to rethink that.

The thing that makes phone strategy hard is information density. You need to see a lot at once, and small screens fight you. The games that succeed solve this with smart layering — tap to drill into detail, pinch to zoom out for the big picture.

Iron Meridian does this well. Its supply-line mechanic sounds like it'd be a nightmare to manage on a phone, but the interface keeps the critical info one tap away. Once I stopped fighting the controls, the depth was all there.

My tip: give any strategy game a full evening before judging it. The first hour on a small screen always feels clumsy. By hour two the muscle memory kicks in and you forget you're on a phone at all.
